General Information
Before and After USCOTS, there will be several reading groups around the theme of expanding opportunities.
The virtual reading groups will consist of 8 – 12 individuals who will meet four times to discuss the book.
During the first meeting, the reading groups will establish their general structure.
The facilitator will email you with more information within a few days of the start of the session.
Reading Groups
Small Online Teaching by Flower Darby and James Lang
When: Wednesday at 4pm ET June 2, 9, 16, 23
Facilitator: Megan Mocko, University of Florida
Connection to the theme: Online classes allow some students access to education that they might not have access to due to the necessity to take care of a family, earn income, or disability. Creating online courses so that all students can succeed is critical to expanding opportunities for these individuals.
Grading for Equity by Joe Feldman
When: Fridays at 12 pm ET June 4, 11, 18, 25
Facilitator: Kelly Spoon, San Diego Mesa College
Connection to the theme: Reconsidering grading practices can empower students in our classrooms and expand opportunities as a result. "We don’t usually think of grading when talking about equity, but in Grading for Equity: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How It Can Transform Schools and Classrooms, Joe Feldman helps us see why grading is an integral part of an equity agenda. He shows us how we can use grading to help students become the leaders of their own learning and lift the veil on how to succeed. He reminds us that authentic assessment and transparent grading are essential parts of a culturally responsive classroom. This must-have book will help teachers learn to implement improved, equity-focused grading for impact." -- Zaretta Hammond
Data Feminism by Catherine D'Ignazio and Lauren Klein
When: During USCOTS, participants will be sent a doodle poll to determine the meeting days and times, which will start the second week of July
Facilitators: Kelly McConville and Nate Wells, Reed College
Connection to the theme: The authors will be keynote speakers at USCOTS 2021! Their book contains lots of case studies and real examples related to data ethics and data justice. Catherine and Lauren also push the reader to think about the power structures associated with data and data science.
