Th10: Inclusive teaching in Statistics: development of a new open-access teaching data resource

By Nicole Wakim

Information

Within statistics education, faculty and institutes are working towards inclusive teaching using a data equity framework (Dogucu et al., 2023). Inclusive datasets used in lecture, homework, and projects are major components of DEIJ-centered teaching practices that are unique to statistics, data science, and analytics. However, finding, vetting, and incorporating socially-centered datasets into course materials is a burdensome task for many educators. In this Beyond session, I will demonstrate my developing open-access resource for teaching datasets that will combine socially inclined data with specific statistics lessons. The data repository aims to make DEIJ-focused activities, datasets, and lessons readily available to professors in the field. I will also discuss one dataset more in-depth, including how I’ve used it in the classroom, students’ reception, materials formed around the data, and key discussions around the social topic.
